The last couple of weeks I have been filling my fantasy football writing fix with a few some commentary on what to expect from the 2012 rookies heading into the season. There are a couple of late round Quarterback sleeper possibilities. There are two potential running back rookies who could make your starting lineup to start the season, with potential of some of their 2012 NFL Draft classmates joining them down the road. What about catching the football? Let’s have a look at the Wide Receivers and Tight Ends in this year’s class from a re-draft perspective…

Justin Blackmon, Jacksonville Jaguars

Justin Blackmon will be the rookie Wide Receiver that will likely go first off of fantasy draft boards. Something that we know going into each season is that there will be some rookie pass catchers that bring in some fantasy points. Some can make decent WR2 options for a chunk of the season (WR1 in given weeks). What is not always certain is a correlation between how early the WR went in the NFL Draft, and their overall talent at the position. More often than not, it is the situation they land in. Enter concerns with Blackmon. He is certainly talented, and will likely be a fantasy force someday. BUT, there is more to worry about than going for him when fantasy football is concerned.

There is the obvious obstacle with the recent DUI arrest.  Another obvious point would be Maurice Jones-Drew getting touches. Aside from that, there is the issue that Blaine Gabbert is likely to be his QB, and the whole having a contract and getting into camp thing.

Realistically, you will not be looking at Blackmon as a consistent contributing force on your fantasy squad anyway. In a 12 team league, he may get some WR3 time to start the season. If that is what you have in mind, look at him after your starting roster is filled.

Michael Floyd, Arizona Cardinals

Another name that will be considered on fantasy draft day based on his NFL Draft stock. Floyd is in a position that is worse than Blackmon, aside from legal troubles. The Cardinals are still not set on who their QB is going to be. While we know for certain that Floyd will not be the #1 WR in Arizona as long as Larry Fitzgerald is around, he may not even make the starting lineup to start the season. The Cardinals appear to be leaning Andre Roberts at the #2 position, and there is still Early Doucet to consider in the slot. Look at one of the old Moss boys, (Randy, Santana) at the position you would have considered Floyd.

Kendall Wright, Tennessee Titans

If it had not been for size, some thought that Kendall Wright may have been the best WR prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft. There is a chance that he may be in the best fantasy football position of the pass catchers. Kenny Britt is doing everything in his power to give Wright playing time with his recent arrest. Despite that, Britt is still recovering from last year’s knee injury, and Wright is expected to fill his starting spot. A fantasy owner can feel good landing Wright late as a WR3 or WR4, knowing there will be weeks you are getting a WR2 on your team.

The Rest

The Giants’ Rueben Randle is worth watching on the wire or a very late round pick. The Giants will place people where they can succeed and if he shows he can, he will get his chances. Stephen Hill is slotted to start with the Jets, but is dealing with a hamstring he should shake by camp. Brian Quick is the guy with the Rams. You take Rams WRs when desperate. Keep an eye on Quick for when you are, because he will be leaned on as the guy in St. Louis.

Tight End

Coby Fleener, Indianapolis Colts

The only Tight End worth mentioning at this time is Coby Fleener with the Colts. There is the obvious relationship with Andrew Luck going back to Stanford. There is the obvious emphasis on the athletic TE after the seasons had by Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski. All exciting stuff, but have perspective and don’t look at him too early, and certainly not as a TE1 to start the season. This is the type of guy that I don’t usually land late because someone else over pays with an earlier pick.

Loads of Talent Left in NFL Draft Round Two

Inevitably, there is first round talent that falls into the second round every year. Team needs, character, and value at positions dictate a draft that doesn’t always make sense. Going into round two Friday, there is an abundance of talent left on the board. Some thoughts…

The Rams are set up to have a solid round two with three picks in the top 13. They addressed the need on the defensive line in the first round. They can still address other needs with potential first round talent with the likes of Cordy Glenn or Jonathan Martin on the offensive line, Stephen Hill, Rueben Randle, or Alshon Jeffery at WR, or take a gamble on Janoris Jenkins at CB. Lavonte David could fill a need at linebacker as well. Things are good in St. Louis.

Courtney Upshaw found himself on the wrong end of a number of 3-4 pass rushers selected in the first round. He will provide a huge value to someone in the second. Could it be the Colts who are moving to a 3-4?

Jerel Worthy was tied to the Broncos in many first round mock drafts. Is it possible they still land him in the second? Devon Still is another available possibility.

Those in need of help on the offensive line can cash in on the above mentioned Cordy Glenn or Jonathan Martin, as well as Peter Konz, Amini Silatolu, Jeff Allen, and Bobby Massey.

Andre Branch and Vinny Currey provide value for those still looking for pass rushers.

While he was border line first round material due to blocking, Coby Fleener is still available for someone looking to upgrade at Tight End, or copy the Patriots two TE attack.

NFL Mock Draft Update | Trades Happen

The 2012 NFL Scouting Combine has came and went, prompting us to update our 2012 NFL Mock Draft before the free agency frenzy. There were a number of players who changed their positioning with combine performances. Also in this update, we address the inevitable trade for positioning to draft Robert Griffin III. It isn’t certain who will do it yet, but it sure does look like it is going to happen. This will be our last one round mock update, moving to three rounds with the next stab at it. Here are some of the changes in this update…

1.2 Washington Redskins (from St. Louis): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor.

That trade we were just talking about?  In this update it is the Redskins making it happen. The Redskins have made some big, questionable, moves over the years, but this is one that we can get behind. Going all in for a franchise QB seems right about now. Everything fell into palce for Griffin III at the combine, and there is not much indicating that he isn’t the right pick here, it just depends on who wants to pay for him.

1.4 Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The early front runners for making a move to get RG3, this update has the Browns not wanting to part with both their first round picks to get him. We previously mentioned that we think that Richardson will fall out of the top ten. We also mentioned that the Browns would be one of the only options that keep him in there, and it is a scenario like this that makes it happen.

1.11 Kansas City Chiefs: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

The last few updates we had the Chiefs taking the value that came with a Trent Richardson fall. Since that is not available here, we are going back with who we had in Mock Draft update #1, Dontari Poe at nose tackle. 40-time aside, Poe had a solid performance at the combine that moved him up and providing some separation in a solid DT class.

1.26 Houston Texans: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

The Texans are finding themselves in the position of needing a WR in the first round for the first time in quite a while. In previous updates we mentioned that they may have to wait until after the combine to have someone move into their position, and that is just what happened.

Georgia Tech Wide Receiver Stephen Hill is shooting up draft boards after his combine workout. The 6’4″, 215 lb Hill tied for the fastest 40 time of the WR day with a 4.36, had the best broad jump at 11-1, and had the 4th best vertical leap. Coming into the combine, Hill was likely looked at as a third round pick. after this performance he should easily be in the second round. Why was he stashed away in the third round? Point the finger at a Georgia Tech offense that doesn’t exactly showcase the WR (28 receptions for 820 yards and five TDs in 2011).
