Ryan Tannehill Best Available Quarterback

I guess it could be a bit premature to call Ryan Tannehill the best available Quarterback considering that the 2012 NFL Draft is still a month and a half away. That is essentially what we have before us though, isn’t it? With the Colts and Redskins in line to take Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III off the board, the former Texas A&M QB is likely on the top of the list for the rest of the Quarterback needy teams in the NFL.

With just a year and a half of starts under his belt, many feel that Tannehill is a bit raw to be spending an early first round pick on. Add the perceived lack of experience to a broken foot and that pretty much sums up the downside for Tannehill. On the plus side he has the ability, smarts, and size to be a solid NFL QB. With that combination, paired with the need of some teams, Tannehill should see himself come off the board in the top half of the first round. The questions is going to be who believes it the most in the month of April.

As the NFL Draft order sits right now, there are four teams that are looking for a QB in the top 13 picks. One of those teams, the Arizona Cardinals, do not appear on the radar for using a first round pick on a signal caller, but will take Peyton manning if they can get him. That leaves Cleveland, Miami, and Seattle. With Free Agency starting this week, we should know soon who decides to go with former 7th rounder Matt Flynn as their big money QB. By the time Tannehill’s workout comes along on March 29th, it could be a two horse race assuming Flynn lands on one of those teams.

NFL Draft Fallout of Redskins Trade to #2

The speculation over where Baylor Quarterback, Robert Griffin III, will land in the 2012 NFL Draft is over. After the Washington Redskins learned that Peyton Manning had no interest in making DC his landing spot, the Redskins went all in on RG3 with three first round draft picks (2012,2013, 2014) and a second round pick. It was thought that where Peyton Manning landed would shape up where Robert Griffin III went, but as it turns out, the deal is all but signed before Free Agency. Now, we can have a look how this move impacts the 2012 NFL Draft…

When we say that the Redskins went all in, we mean the Redskins went all in. Traditionally, the Redskins have put their money on free agents who have established careers elsewhere, and are toward the end of their career. Most recently, Donovan McNabb. The Skins have been in dire need of a franchise quarterback since Joe Theismann departed in the 80s. They are putting their foreseeable draft future in the hands of RG3, ensuring they won’t have a first round pick until 2015 without making moves. They do have plenty of cap space and are expected to fill holes via Free Agency.

A new era begins in St. Louis with the arrival of Jeff Fisher. How lucky is a new coach to a team to be given a staring allowance of five first round picks in your first three years with the team? This puts the Rams in the position to start a major rebuilding effort. In our latest mock draft we had projected the Rams use the pick from the #6 spot on Oklahoma State WR, Justin Blackmon. The Rams could add even more picks if they choose to move back again and possibly target another need.

While it was said that the Browns were not interested in giving up the picks to move up to get RG3, word was that they were inquiring again in recent days. Now the Browns are looking at the possibility of filling a need with Blackmon, or possibly Trent Richardson. The Browns can consider Ryan Tannehill (whose stock just shot up), but he may be a reach at #4. It depends on just how bad the Browns want to move on from Colt McCoy or make a move for Matt Flynn.

The Dolphins and Seahawks were never really in the RG3 hunt, but they will be impacted as well. Ryan Tannehill’s stock has just taken off, and these teams will have to consider positioning themselves. Miami believes they are still in the Peyton Manning game, so they will not panic yet. The Seahawks want to be in that game, but at this point are not. Another possibility is that teams start to look past Brandon Weeden’s age and consider him in the first round. Brock Osweiler, Nick Foles, and Kirk Cousins will certainly be watching to see how Free Agency plays out.

NFL Draft News Update 2/11

Jeff Legwold at the Denver Post has the Broncos looking at South Carolina defensive End, Melvin Ingram with their first round pick. We have Ingram long gone by the time the Broncos pick in our latest Mock Draft, and the Broncos going interior line when their pick does come around.

Russ Lande at The Sporting News thinks that North Carolina Linebacker, Zach Brown, moved his way into the top 20 of the first round with his Senior Bowl performance.

In a recent chat on ESPN, Mel Kiper identified pass rusher as the route that the Green bay Packers…

They need a 3-4 OLB. Someone opposite Clay Matthews who can rush the passer. Whitney Mercilous. Bruce Irvin. Melvin Ingram. Nick Perry. Courtney Upshaw. There are a lot of options for Green Bay this year, in terms of players that fit the 3-4. Upshaw and Ingram, you’d probably have to move up for.

Wes Bunting at the National Football Post ranks the deepest positions in the draft.

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora sees Robert Griffin III in Washington before Peyton Manning.

The Draft War Room has posted their Offensive Tackle Rankings.

Josh Norris at Rotoworld has Justin Blackmon at the top of his overrated list.

2012 NFL Mock Draft Updated|26 changes

Our 2012 NFL Mock Draft has been updated. Since our last mock, the Senior Bowl has came and went, and the Giants have officially been placed in the #32 pick with their Super Bowl crown. There are an astounding twenty-six changes from the last mock to this one, starting in the Top Five…

1.1 Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

No change here, and there isn’t likely to be one in the foreseeable future. The only real question at this time, one that is getting old already, is what will the Colts do with Peyton Manning?
1.2 St. Louis Rams: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Here is the pick that everyone expects someone to trade into for RG3. We are not projecting trades though, so the Rams upgrade in the trenches. Justin Blackmon landed here before, which could very well happen, but we are seeing the rams trying to seal up the line.

1.3 Minnesota Vikings: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.

If Kalil were to fall, we would see him going here. If not, it may be hard for the Vikings to pass up on the value that is Blackmon, especially when you have Ponder to build around. Another option is Riley Reiff, but at this point in the process he may be considered a reach. Watch as he or another OT works his way up into the Top 5 area after the combine though.
1.4 Cleveland Browns: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

No change here. We think there will be a trade to the #2 or #3 spot for Griffin, but in our scenario, he falls to the Browns here. Something to consider…imagine the Browns moving down like last year and accumulating more picks. Would they consider it even if Griffin was here?
1.5 Tampa bay Buccaneers: Morris Clayborn, CB, LSU

We had Trent Richardson going here previously. A talent like Clayborn would be hard to pass up in an NFC South that boasts Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Cam Newton (yeah, we think he will get even better).

Picks 6-32 HERE.
