2013 NFL Draft Weekly | #2

NFL Draft Weekly is back…a little late in the week. We are taking some time out on this Thanksgiving morning to bring you a feast of 2013 NFL Draft links to sink your teeth into. Time has gone fast this season in college football, with only a couple weeks left before we are talking bowl games. How about this for putting it into perspective…we are already talking the 2013 Senior Bowl…

If you are interested in the scouting fest that is the Senior Bowl, you should be following them on Twitter as they are dishing out names of players that are joining the roster. Most recently Missouri Linebacker, Zaviar Gooden, and Arkansas Wide Receiver, Cobi Hamilton.

Todd McShay has crowned Georgia Linebacker,  Jarvis Jones as his top prospect of the moment. (Insider content, but article preiew gives the goods).

Steve Greenberg talked 2013 NFL Draft QB prospects on The Sporting News Huddle Up! podcast. On West Virginia QB Geno Smith…

He’s in no way responsible from a draft judgment standpoint for the fact that West Virginia fell off the edge of the earth after starting 5-0. The reasons why he got buzz early are still relevant now. He’s improved his mechanics. His accuracy has been terrific. He makes every throw and stands tall in the pocket. I’ve seen him take a lot of hits and deliver the ball at the last moment, keeping plays alive for his receivers.

The NFL Draft Site is talking the 2013 NFL Draft QB class too.

Eric Stoner at Rotoworld talks the Florida State pass rushers, Bjoern Werner and Cornellius “Tank” Carradine.

2013 NFL Draft Weekly| #1

With about a month to go in the NCAA football regular season, we are going to start our 2013 NFL Draft Weekly posts. These posts will bring some tidbits on some of the draft prospects that we will be keeping tabs on up until the late April selection show that is the NFL Draft. Starting with Texas A&M’s upset of Alabama…

Rob Rang at CBS Sports credits Offensive Tackles, Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews, for the Texas A&M win over Alabama.

Ouch! This picture has Dee Milliner landing flat on his face as Malcome Kennedy scores the winning touchdown for Texas A&M.

USC Quarterback Matt Barkley has become the leading passer in Pac-12 history.

Notre Same Coach, Brian Kelly, talks up Manti Te’o's leadership:

“He’s the leader of our defense,” Kelly said. “We got frustrated at times (Saturday). Some of our kids got frustrated. They have to be able to keep their composure and they have a leader out there in Manti who is keeping the guys under control. When you need a big play he’s going to be around the football.”

Despite losing to Oklahoma State, West Virginia’s Geno Smith threw for 364 yards and a couple of TDs.

Georgia’s Alec Ogletree racked up ten tackles and a couple of sacks against Auburn.

South Carolina running back, Marcus Lattimore, provided fans with a video message. Sad story on the injury. Doctors are optimistic he will play again.

Purdue Defensive Tackle, Kawann Short, grabbed six tackles and a sack in a win over Iowa.

Tyler Wilson became Arkansas’ career leader in completions in their loss to South Carolina.

More NFL Draft News Updates | 2/27

As has been expected, the St. Louis Rams have confirmed that they will indeed trade away the number two pick, essentially opening the bidding on the future of Robert Griffin III. The question now is who wants to pay the most. Jeff Fisher couldn’t have timed it better to land in St. Louis…well, unless he timed it to where they were a winning team, but you know what I mean.

Memphis Defensive Tackle, Dontari Poe pounded out a 4.87 40-yard dash. Yeah, you heard it right…the 346 lb Poe. Video at The Shutdown Corner.

Boston College linebacker, Luke Kuechly is landing in the top five in most drills.

Houston’s Case Keenum continues to watch his hopes of being picked in the draft slip away.

Rob Rang of CBS Sport feels that Arizona State linebacker, Vontaze Burfict, could be watching himself slip to day three of the draft based on his combine performance.

The Sporting News thinks that South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram has locked up a top 15 pick.

Syracuse defensive End, Chandler Jones, on the other hand stood out according to Steve Muench of Scouts Inc.

Brian Biggane at The Palm Beach Post has a look at what 40 times really mean.

With the only real question about the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft being whether or not Andrew Luck will be starting or backing up Peyton Manning, the focus has been on Robert Griffin III and the Cleveland Browns. Most mock drafts that do not include trades having RG3 fall to the Browns at the number four pick, but realistically, they will have more competition than that. Chances are that the Browns use the ammo they have to move up and get RG3 in the two picks before them, all the way to #2 if they want to be safe. ESPN analyst, Todd McShay points out what everyone else is seeing as well…

“If the Browns want him, they need to move up and get him,” McShay said Thursday during a conference call. “I’ll be surprised if he lasts till four, and I’ll be even surprised if he gets to No. 3, because I think that No. 2 pick is up for public auction. I think the Rams are going to get a good deal to move back and can still get a player they want at tackle or wide receiver. And if it’s not Cleveland, then it’s probably going to be Washington right behind them leapfrogging Cleveland to get up to No. 2.”

Staff at NFL.com are debating which players other than Andrew Luck are can’t miss prospects for NFL teams.

At CBS Sports, the debate is over whether or not Ryan Tannehill is a first round prospect.

Wisconsin QB, Russell Wilson, still insists that his height is not an issue. Except that it is if you still need to insist on it.

USC Offensive Tackle, Matt Kalil, takes getting set for the NFL Scouting Combine.

Stanford Guard, David DeCastro is running a draft diary at The Sporting News

NFL Draft News Update 2/16

We tend to think that another QB is going to move up the order (maybe as far as the Top 10) through the draft process. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock thinks a guy on the move toward the first round is Texas A&M QB, Ryan Tannehill. He actually had more to say about what he didn’t like than what he liked, but it wasn’t too harsh and is to be expected given Tannehill’s experience…

“What I don’t like about him, is he waits for routes to develop before he throws the football,” Mayock says. “In other words, he lacks anticipations, and because of that he throws late into coverage and makes mistakes. Now, that’s not atypical for a young quarterback in college football, particularly one that has only about a year-and-a-half of starting under his belt. He hasn’t started as many games as I’d like to see from a typical first-round NFL quarterback. Typically, you’d like to see 25 minimal starting assignments. But I think he’s going to be a first-round guy.”

Stanford has a couple of other smart, highly ranked athletes that used to protect that Luck guy in Jonathan Martin and David DeCastro.

Todd McShay mentioned on Twitter that Vontaze Burfict collected 17 personal fouls in 35 games…ouch.

Football Outsiders are doing the thinking for ESPN, putting out NFL  team needs.

Mocking the Draft has a look at who needs a good showing at the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine.
